The meatpacking area on Manhattan’s far west side has recently undergone tremendous development. Old industrial sites, such as 437-439 West 13th St., are now prime candidates for new residential development. The site sat just outside the boundary of the neighboring Gansevoort Historic District, thus allowing it to have more developable area that would have been allowable within the historic district. It also sat on the Highline elevated railroad, an abandoned freight rail line now bring developed as a public park.
This feasibility study examined a variety of different building massing for the site and its relationship to the Highline. The final version opened up the eight story building in an L-shaped configuration towards the river, the West light and the highline.
