A grand five story landmarked Beaux-Arts townhouse at 35 East 68th Street designed by Carrere & Hastings in 1899 required substantial interior work to correct various misguided interior changes implemented over the years.
The principal spaces were gutted and reworked, by opening them up and allowing them to breathe, while leaving in place some of the more historically important aspects of the house that had survived, such as the parlor mantelpiece and elegant tiffany windows. These were restored to their original splendor, and complimented with new rooms, circulation, and finishes.
The new architectural interventions included the living room, dining room and kitchen, bedrooms and staircase, which allow for more efficient use of the available space, but also for setting the original restored areas in a context that enhances their inherent quality.
