The townhouse has existed in New York since the very beginning. It represents an exercise in the planning of all domestic functions within a narrow shell usually 20 to 30 feet in width on a lot 100 feet or so deep with a 30 feet rear yard. There is considerable freedom in the development of a townhouse since the infrastructure can be rearranged as required. As well, townhouses often have potential exterior garden space (albeit limited) which must be related to the interior. Our townhouse projects have attempted to create modern, multi-functioning spaces within historical townhouse structures. We have opened up spaces that were often overly closed in, while at the same time preserving and restoring the grander spaces of these older buildings.
