Since the original settlement of New York, its' inhabitants have wanted to escape periodically from what was always a crowded, bustling city. Suburbs began to ring New York once it became possible to commute by ferry from Brooklyn Heights to lower Manhattan in the eighteenth century. Today, suburban houses are an integral part of many New Yorkers experience of the city. In addition, the urge to escape from New York frequently includes vacation houses even further afield, where it is possible to feel that the city has been left far behind, even if for an all to brief period of time. |
