New York apartment buildings first began to appear in the 1880s when the well-to-do began to accept the idea that fashionable living could be undertaken in something other than a townhouse. Apartment buildings have been built ever since. Although much can be changed through renovation, limitations are imposed by building infrastructure such as plumbing risers, exterior window locations and ventilation ducts. In general, this means that there are certain conventions regarding kitchen and bathroom locations and the cellular arrangement of living areas and bedrooms. Like variations on a theme, our apartment projects seek to work within a more traditional vocabulary to respond to these conventions. |
